I once heard a story of a man who was so addicted to sugar (read: processed foods, candy, soda, etc., aka ACID) that he stuffed handfuls of gummy bears and M&Ms in his mouth—while he was sleeping (truth). Yikes! Good thing he didn’t choke, but how scary to be so addicted that his sleeping self still had to feed his addiction.
I can’t imagine how gross and sluggish that guy must feel on a daily basis. Okay, actually, I can — that guy was ME! Yep, I used to be known as the Candyman because I was the guy on the soccer bus with the big brown bag stuffed with candy that everyone wanted to sit next to. My blood type was literally food dyes and sugar.
And as a result of all the STRESS EATING over the years, I suffered with all the things I thought were “normal” to get as a kid and then as a teenager: migraines, acne, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), and chronic health issues that come from living in a totally inflamed body and mind.
It was HORRIBLE. No one should have to feel that way, but those unconscious eating patterns continued through college, and even as I was a practicing doctor in NYC, teaching health, but certainly not walking the walk.
That old saying, “The plumber’s faucet always leaks.” That was my life. I was so tied up in work that I didn’t practice what I preached. I was a living contradiction, and I am sure other people tragically can relate.
There is HOPE. I made small, daily, and exciting but realistic changes to go from being called Candyman to a total ACID-KICKER…and you can do the same.
